My current answer is (b), despite trying multiple magic spells, firefox,
chrome, HAL PPA, HAL from source.
Trying to get an idea of what state of affairs is usual amongst us
linux-using wierdos...

a) Running Gentoo with firefox, adobe-flash & hal-flash.
I got it working a month or 2 ago when it was previously discussed on
this list, by adding the hal-flash package. Note it seems to break with
firefox updates, requiring hal-flash reinstalled.
