Pardon the extra thread. Had to email it from the server and was not
able to download the inbox for some reason.
specific commands to get zoneminder installing were:
Add Repository
apt-get install software-properties-common python-software-properties
add-apt-repository ppa:iconnor/zoneminder
apt-get update
Install Zoneminder
apt-get install zoneminder
Prior to that I used (from a stock ubuntu 14.04 desktop install)
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
The guide I was following;

First problem was the referenced mysql file not being present, which is
why I had guessed it was not installed.
