I use the built in ability of windowing applications to be available on different hosts on my LAN using the X windows client server-model and network transparency.
Often distributions as a security measure modify the /etc/X11/init/xserverrc file which starts X by appending "-nolisten TCP" to the exec line. I upgraded xorg-server to version 1.17.4. Prior to this upgrade to enable network transparency I edited the xserverrc file by deleting any references to "-nolisten TCP" After the upgrade this method of enabling network transparency no longer worked. After delving into the depths of the freedesktop.org mail archives I discovered that you need need to explicitly append the following to the exec line to get network transparency working; -listen TCP Posted to the list so you do not have to repeat my pain. Cheers Ross Drummond PS The approved way of forwarding X windows is to do it using SSH. I only use X forwarding occasionally on my LAN so I reckon the security provided by SSH is overkill for my situation. _______________________________________________ Linux-users mailing list [email protected] http://lists.canterbury.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/linux-users
