Hi, Just updating how I got on with my phone following the last meeting.
Phone: Samsung galaxy note 3 I want to upgrade to Android version 8 as stock note 3 only ever got updates as far as version 5. Was looking to use LineageOS, but Gary (or is that Garry?) advised the ResurrectionRemix as a more complete version to use. So, had to get root on the phone, which was in a bit of a messed up non-booting state due to previous attempts. Used Odin 3.11.1 to put back the stock Vodafone NZ system ROM (rom found using google). Used 'Magisk Manager' (download .apk from github as no longer in playstore) to get root. Next needed to use install TWRP recovery environment so could get to install latest Android version Tried using 'TWRP Manager' from the playstore (also wanted BusyBox installed), but this didn't seem to work don't know why. So next used Odin from my pc to install the TWRP system, this succeeded. (I think this was as far as I got during the meeting). Placed new OS on the sd card and the latest gApps (opengapps.org) for an ARM processor. Booted TWRP, backed up everything to sd card. Wiped davlik, cache and data. Tried install of OS, failed - turns out I had the wrong one meant for exynos (d'oh!), got the right one for snapdragon lte and tried again. This time it installed the OS but failed on the gApps, not enough system space. The phone could boot without gApps, but couldn't do a lot, didn't even have a web browser. Found people succeeded using gApps 'nano' on a note 3, a bit of a cut down from the full version. So did OS and gApps nano install again, this time gApps install also succeeded. Booted and have a working phone with all the bells and whistles, my child seems happy with it :) Now I'm going to try to do the same thing for a Galaxy S5... Thanks to Rik and especially Gary for the guidance. Cheers, Bryce. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Rik Tindall Sent: Monday, 27 August 2018 3:27 PM To: Canterbury Linux Users Group <[email protected]> Cc: GNUz Free Software Christchurch <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Linux-users] ALPS?
