Okay, sorry for any confusion caused.
Unlike PuTTY, XTerm doesn't render on a backing pixmap, but renders
directly to the display. XTerm does, of course, keep all the data
necessary to redraw the display; it keeps it as an array of characters
(with some extra data for fun). This data structure is sometimes
called a backing store.
