I once thought about a possible way to do it wit legacy input methods by creating a "proxy" input method that can conenct to other input methods and switch between them. That is: - applicaitons only connect to the proxyIM - the proxyIM just pass trough any keyboard input, but a single key combination that popups a window where it is possible to choose the XIM that proxyIM will connect to. - and for other XIM it is transparent, they just serve a client being proxyIM instead serving the actual application, but they don't know that. would that be feasible ? > Many softwares should be rewrote using internationalized widget > libraries such as Pango to support complex languages. Also; but that doesn't solve the problem of people needing to input for example Japanese and French (a not so unusual case), as Japanese needs a japanese XIM and French needs xkb Compose file (for typing the accents); and currently they are mutually exclusive; the only app allowing both I know is "yudit", as it in fact can switch the input method it uses, so I configured one of "x-utf-8:en_US.UTF-8" (it uses the standard X11 input (trough xkb) with the "en_US.UTF-8" locale (so it uses the proper Compose file) and one of "kinput2:ja_JP.EUC-JP" (XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2" and "ja_JP.EUC-JP" locale). Having a way to solve the problem for *all* programs and widgets supporting XIM method would be nice, if all that would be needed would be setting XMODIFIERS="@im=proxyIM" that would be a very big step forward in usability. And it doesn't prevent doing better and cleaner solutions, at the level of widget toolkits for example.
