I didn't notice any difference when I tried the following: mkdir t cd t x=0; while [ $x -lt 255 ] ; do x=$[$x+1] ; printf "" > "$(printf "\x$(printf "%02x" $x)")" ; done for x in ? ; do echo -n "$x" ; done | od -Ax -tx1 There were 252 files created: all octet values except '\0', '.', '/' and '\n' - the latter due to a limitation of the shell, I assume.
