I've compiled James Su's SCIM (Smart Common Input Method platform:
http://www.turbolinux.com.cn/~suzhe/scim/) v. 0.5.1 and the
accompanying scim-tables-0.2.2 with the intention of using
SCIM for inputting Chinese under a UTF-8 locale on Linux.
Everything compiled nicely. I've added:
scim -d
export [EMAIL PROTECTED]
... to my ~/.xinitrc, and the gtk+-based gui "scim-setup" works
perfectly.
Despite all this, I haven't figured out how to get SCIM to actually
work with an application! Typing the default "CTRL - SPACE" or a
custom key trigger that I specified in scim-setup does not cause an
scim input method toolbar to be displayed.
I am using XFree86 v. 4.3.0:

Can anyone suggest where I should begin investigating the problem? Is
this likely due to an X configuration issue that I am unaware of?
Excuse my ignorance of XIM: Is it the case that only some applications
support XIM? If that is the case, how can one determine which X apps
support it, and which don't? Ideally, I would envision using scim for
input with KDE Konsole, the Unicode editor Yudit, and Open Office, for starters.
I would be very grateful for any enlightening advice. Note that I chose to
try SCIM as an IME since it seemed likely to support UTF-8.
