I usually don't argue for using compatibility characters,
but in this case the "lesser evil" solution may be to use
the new CJK COMPATIBILTY characters on Plane 2, iff(!!)
proper rich text cannot be used. The new CJK COMPATIBILITY
characters (which were suggested by Japan, and do, as far
as I can tell, use the "Japanese" (and "Korean"?) version
of the sample glyphs in the charts). It's a Japanese oriented
solution, of no help for other glyphic differences. But I
find ESC-sequences and "TAG" characters to be a great step
backwards. Further, automatic fi-ligatures would not be used
in terminal applications, italic is not used in terminal
applications, the inclination of acute may not matter much
if one is limited to fixed width glyphs (often ugly) anyway...
