Well, it is better to avoid using valid unicode codepoints, as otherwise
they could, mistakenly, be used to display those chars.

Does Xft always imply antia-aliasing ? (because my video card doesn't
support AA; but I would like to be able to use Xft goodies)

If Xft can work without AA, and if there are some available OpenType fonts,
then that would be the right solution.
However, if that is not the case, if bdf/pcf fonts need to be created, there
is the problem to create a new font encoding for Syriac.
