What tools are currently available to display Syriac UTF-8 files under X11? In particular, what fonts are available? (Syriac is like Arabic in that it requires bidi and ligature substitution, but in contrast to Arabic, Unicode does not encode presentation forms.) Is Syriac supported by Pango/GTK+ 1.3? http://www.pango.org/ Is Syriac supported by Omega? http://omega-system.sourceforge.net/ We have a research student working on Syriac OCR who needs some Unix output tool in her work and would be interested in contributing if there are still bits missing.
