VIM and utf-8

I have problems with VIM 5.8 and UTF-8 files.

Has someone succeded in enabling VIM to support UTF-8 files?

I have tried on a glibc 2.2 - linux system, with a UTF-8 locale,
in a UTF console, and with a cyrilic UTF keymap.

But VIM only shows some strange, escape-like 
(or "batal" in local slang :) characters.
