* In brief, XEmacs 21.4 and later have some internal (C-level) support
for UTF-8, UCS-2, and UCS-4 coding systems.  The C-level support is
not UTF-16-aware, but surrogate characters can be processed by
appropriate Lisp level-mechanisms.  None are standard yet, but it
doesn't take too much Emacs hacking ability to do the work.
Definitely for hackers, though.

* Hisashi Miyashita's Mule-UCS works well for Japanese and European
scripts at least (these I can verify myself; I don't have any Chinese
users, but I know that there have been complaints about Mule-UCS
itself from them).  As far as I know almost all Unicode-related
features of Mule-UCS are available when used with XEmacs.  Any power
user should be able to install this.  I can't find a documentation
URL, sorry, but the sources are at ftp://ftp.m17n.org/pub/mule/Mule-UCS/.

I am working on an XEmacs package version of Mule-UCS.  Once that is
available, I would say it is reasonable to say "XEmacs supports
Unicode."  We're not quite to that stage yet.  This package will be
released as soon as I get around to it (it does not depend on a new
release of the XEmacs core).

There are also RPMs and .debs available, for Linux users.  I doubt
they automatically interface with XEmacs, but they probably can be set
up by hand by the above-mentioned power users.

* XEmacs/UTF-2000 is a version of XEmacs which uses UTF-8 as its
internal representation, and supports file I/O well.  I believe that
it's still not too bright about disambiguating Han characters by
language (used to be hard-coded---if there's a JIS font, use it, if
not, use GB, if not use KSC, if not, use Big5).  This is primarily a
research vehicle for research into Chinese characters.

* In the current development branch, Ben Wing has implemented Unicode
support on the Windows platform via the native APIs.  Much of this is
expected to port in a straightforward way to other platforms.
However, since native support for Unicode on most Unix platforms is
much less, and certainly not Windows-compatible, this will take some
effort.

There is currently no target date for the next major release of
XEmacs.  I hope to have some idea within a couple of weeks.  It will
include Ben's work.  I'll try to let you know when we have some idea.
