I think the ancient vendor versions are a lost cause. But BSD versions
just need someone dedicated enough to fix all the UTF-8 problems and get
it merged back in upstream. (There are a lot of things that just need
elbow juice in the Open Source world. The problem is finding someone
with free elbows.) (Done right, this could help fix ancient vendor
problems, by getting proprietary Unix's to adopt BSD versions of tools.)
