The problem has been fixed in XTerm 157 (over six months ago), but
only when compiled against the version of Xlib that comes with 4.1.0
or later.

What is recommended is to upgrade to XTerm 157 or later and compile
against the 4.1 libraries (or later). This is the only way to get
reliable selection conversion (cut & paste), reliable compose key
support, or reliable input method support.

If you're using Debian, I would tend to suggest grabbing the version
of XFree86 (libs + XTerm, the server is irrelevant) that is in testing
(I don't use unstable myself). However, due to the change of the
version of libc, you may very well end up with a system that is more
like testing than stable.

If you're not willing to use testing, you may give a spin to the
unofficial potato XFree86 4 debs. While I have not tried them myself,
there are said work well.

Hope this helps,
