As long as the locale option is available to set behavior back, backwards
compatibility is available; it doesn't necessarily have to be the default,
as long as it's prominantly documented.  I'd prefer to see standard locale
behavior rather than yet another application that needs special configuration.

It'd probably be best to leave it off by default until the next major
release, though.
