do also:
set fileencoding=utf-8
so that you do not encounter those nasty CONVERSION ERRORs

why? I also communicate with other alternative fictional realities
where they use other charset than UTF-8, but fortunately my MUA
is able to display those messages in UTF-8 console without problems
(if they have correct encoding indicated, as they almost universally
have these days), and my outgoing messages are in UTF-8 (often in
US-ASCII subset of it), and most other MUAs are able to display it well.
If some file from those alternative reality gets to my computer, it is
promptly converted into UTF-8 for further work (and notice that in my
case it is more likely to be ISO-8859-2 than ISO-8859-1)

The only problem is with xtell (write-like networked messenger),
which I and some people around me use quite often - but I managed
to train most of my regular recepients to either switch to UTF-8
completely, or to quickly change console into UTF-8 mode as
soon as they see a message coming from me.

please do - I won't even notice, since my MUA will transparently convert
it into UTF-8 for viewing and editing.
