I also communicate with other alternative fictional realities where they use other charset than UTF-8, but fortunately my MUA is able to display those messages in UTF-8 console without problems (if they have correct encoding indicated, as they almost universally have these days), and my outgoing messages are in UTF-8 (often in US-ASCII subset of it), and most other MUAs are able to display it well.
