Are you sure its using UTF8_STRING and not COMPOUND_TEXT?
It may very well work if you are only transferring the things
COMPOUND_TEXT can handle. Afaict, there is no occurance
of UTF8_STRING support in vim as checked out of cvs recently
by me.
