XX is indeed one of the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes reserved for private use (along with AA, ZZ, QM-QZ, XA-XZ). However, I would have strongly prefered that locale names do not use a country name at all, unless it is necessary to distinguish between countries. The only excuse to do so is usually the currency field, which nobody uses anyway and which I wished POSIX removed as it is useless in practice. Markus -- Markus G.
