(B> I've compiled James Su's SCIM (Smart Common Input Method platform:
(B> http://www.turbolinux.com.cn/~suzhe/scim/) v. 0.5.1 and the
(B> accompanying scim-tables-0.2.2 with the intention of using
(B> SCIM for inputting Chinese under a UTF-8 locale on Linux.
(B>
(B> Everything compiled nicely. I've added:
(B>
(B> scim -d
(B> export [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(B>
(B> ... to my ~/.xinitrc, and the gtk+-based gui "scim-setup" works
(B> perfectly.
(B>
(B> Despite all this, I haven't figured out how to get SCIM to actually
(B> work with an application! Typing the default "CTRL - SPACE" or a
(B> custom key trigger that I specified in scim-setup does not cause an
(B> scim input method toolbar to be displayed.
(B
(BWhat locale settings are you using?
(B
(BYou need to set not only XMODIFIERS but also LC_CTYPE to a Chinese
(Blocale, for example
(B
(B export LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8
(B
(Botherwise it won't work. Of course you can also keep LC_CTYPE unset
(Band set LANG or LC_ALL to zh_CN.UTF-8, that has the same effect, but
(Bif you want to keep your system mainly to English, you might want to
(Buse
(B
(B export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
(B export LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8

(B> I am using XFree86 v. 4.3.0:
(B>
(B> XFree86 Version 4.3.0
(B> Release Date: 27 February 2003
(B> X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
(B> Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.16 i686 [ELF]
(B> Build Date: 25 March 2003
(B> Before reporting problems, check http://www.XFree86.Org/
(B> to make sure that you have the latest version.
(B> Module Loader present
(B>
(B> Can anyone suggest where I should begin investigating the problem? Is
(B> this likely due to an X configuration issue that I am unaware of?
(B> Excuse my ignorance of XIM: Is it the case that only some applications
(B> support XIM? If that is the case, how can one determine which X apps
(B> support it, and which don't? Ideally, I would envision using scim for
(B> input with KDE Konsole, the Unicode editor Yudit, and Open Office, for starters.
(B>
(B> I would be very grateful for any enlightening advice. Note that I chose to
(B> try SCIM as an IME since it seemed likely to support UTF-8.
(B
(Bxcin also supports input in UTF-8. You have to start the xcin server
(Bin a non-UTF-8 Chinese locale, but the clients can be started with
(BLC_CTYPE set to Chinese UTF-8 locales and you can input in UTF-8.
