I wouldnt mind some progress. There are many small steps to be taken.
Several of these would mean the introduction of new ioctls, which is
not especially popular, but we might try and see whether such
patches are accepted.

A good start would be an improved ioctl for composed characters.

The existence of the fork kbd / console_tools slows down development.
I cannot easily change kbd and the kernel. Hope that sooner or later
everybody will start using the same package again, and life will be
simpler.

Maybe console_tools is unmaintained today - the last release I saw
was from 1999. It is still used by Debian, don't know by what
other distributions.
