Uh, no, if they have to hand-apply a fix, that turns it into a custom
version -- it's *not* 2.6.8 any more. Particularly if they don't have
Perl programming expertise on hand to verify that the fix is harmless,
it's not surprising that they're reluctant to do that. Unfortunate, yes,
but not surprising.
