I don't take snapshots often but I've used the raw frame capturing capabilities (-c and -C arguments) of luvcview in the past. The problem with those is, however, that they're indeed raw, so you have to convert them to some useful format first. I've written a small tool that converts YUY2 to RGB (if anybody wants it, let me know and I'll post it), the RGB can then be processed with ImageMagick. MJPEG raw frames are generally a little easier to process.
