Believe it or not, it actually means what it says: the camera
automatically focuses on whatever is nearest to it.  This functionality
is implemented in hardware, and there is no apparent way to override it.

It's most noticeable if you suddenly move toward or away from the
camera, as there is a bit of lag where everything becomes blurry while
it refocuses.  Also it occasionally decides to focus on something in the
background, but 90% of the time it gets the focal point right, and the
picture is very sharp for a fairly cheap webcam.
