I'd be very interested to see the result of your experimentation :-) Computing a relative out-of-focus estimate shouldn't be too difficult, but getting an absolute out-of-focus estimate seems much more difficult. That's probably why Logitech moves the focus slowly from one end to the other and compute a relative out-of-focus estimate for each position.
