"Linux Device Drivers, Third Edition" by Jonathan Corbet, Alessandro Rubini, 
and Greg Kroah-Hartman is quite good.

You will obviously need some C programming background. I'd recommend starting 
small. Have a look at the Linux Kernel Janitor Project at 
http://janitor.kernelnewbies.org/

Another problem with the MS driver (I can't say I'm surprised). It should at 
least print a warning when the device is broken.
