Hi,

I have a new Canon Powershot G9 and I would like to use it as v4l device. I know there is gphoto2 or the convert programm (not Imagemagick) to access the camera. convert also creates a viewfinder as GTK Window and you can see, what the camera sees in her viewfinder.

I now have the idea to use this ptp feature (redirecting the viewfinder image to the ram and then read it out by a programm) to a / dev/video device, which I can then access for example with xawtv or something else.

My Problem is:

I don't know where to start. Is it possible to use the libptp in a driver? There is this wall between kernel space and user space, isn't it? Is it possible to access the cam's viewfinder via libptp and redirect it to a / dev/video device? How can I "create" a device for that?
Can someone of you give me a hint?

Would be great to get something from you.

Thanks.

Mike
