The good news is you don't have to spend $99 on a newer webcam, as the other you got is unrelated to the infamous firmware bug (although this doesn't rule out the possibility that you could experience that problem later). As Skype is a closed-source software, I think you should complain directly to them until they give you a solution, or tell you where to ask if they are sure your issue is not related to their software.
