Yep. I finally filed a report to Skype today via:
 http://support.skype.com/index.php?_a=tickets&_m=submit

It is a bug that has bothered me for awhile too.

For reference, my report follows.

Linux client shows USB microphone as both input and output device

Brandon Philips [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a webcam with a usb microphone. The microphone works great as a
input device but Skype incorrectly shows the device in the dropdown for
output devices too.

ALSA makes data available about whether a device is in or out:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: AD198x Digital [AD198x Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ arecord -l
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: U0x46d0x991 [USB Device 0x46d:0x991], device 0: USB Audio [USB

Subdevices: 1/1
