This looks like xawtv has a problem with your Xinerama configuration.
Have you tried disabling Xinerama (i.e. using a single screen), just to
go sure? I'm afraid there are quite a few apps out there which have
(minor) issues with Xinerama.

Do they all fail with the same error? That would be peculiar, they are
somewhat differently implemented, I think.
Firstly, you should try the reference UVC Linux implementation:
luvcview.
Secondly, you should try any app which accesses the webcam but doesn't
use X11. "luvcview -L", v4l-info, and others come to mind. (xawtv has
quite a few more or less useless V4L apps.)

See, they probably implement their X11 stuff differently. So you're
probably just out of luck with the apps you tried.[*] What's more,
xawtv(-3.x) and gqcam are quite unmaintained, nobody is fixing any
errors popping up with recent innovations such as new drivers or new
X11 configurations (though they shouldn't be buggy as is).

[*] camorama is another app to try. ;-) "mplayer tv://" works nicely
for me as well.
