I didn't know it either, my fault.
I thought it wasn't going to work until I get rid of the error msg or,
better, until I fix its cause, so I did not test with every program
at every single attempt.

I'm using the last version in debian unstable, which is 0.10.20, but the
only thing i get is a nice '70s-like test card with a white noise rectangle.

There's no trace in kernel log, and other apps keep working after a
skype crash, so it's probably its fault.

Actually I've read someone suggesting in a forum that it could be a ov534.
Today I opened it and I can confirm: the chip is labeled as
OV0534-LB10, just like this:
