 This appears to be an intermittent hardware issue rather than kernel/driver,
 although the failures seem to have become much more frequent with 2.6.25.
 But that may be a coincidence ...

 I was using mplayer because it issues some error messages that might help
 diagnosing, whereas skype doesn't. What I noticed was that whenever mplayer
 failed, it was using

 whereas whenever it works, it prints it's using a raw video stream.
