Hi Jon,

I'm completely beginner with linux webcam world too, I have had
MS LifeCam HD-5000 for just two weeks, but what in my experience
guvcview is much better tool troubleshooting a uvc webcam.

Are you using a laptop with a built in webcam? If yes, the built in
cam is probably the default one. If you can't get decent image out
of your cam, try adjusting exposure. Turn it to manual first.

Hope this helps,
Jani
