That kind of behaviour can be caused by a USB core bug (quite unlikely though), a camera firmware bug that makes the camera crash and reboot (much more likely) or by electrical issues such as bad cables or a noisy environment (both are usually related). If you have a Windows partition on the computer, does the camera work on Windows ?
