I am using the CLGD5428 w/ 1meg vram on a 32MB 486. I don't think
that I got the thing to work at 16bpp either. I never ran into the black on
black problem until I got a laptop (with a completely different video card).
Regarding just the black on black problem - see if the cirrus card
has an option like "NOACCEL" and enable that to see if it'll work correctly.
Of course, this may make things unacceptably slow...
