hrm, i thought i grabbed 0.2-rc3, but it seems it was 0.2-rc2 instead.  while 
the rc2 tag is part of the current master branch history, rc3 is not.  looks 
like rc3 is a few commits ahead of the master branch atm ...

i just checked latest master and it works fine for me with older autoconfs
