I was only using a monitor device.

izattach /dev/ttyUSB0
iz add wpan-phy0
iz monitor wpan-phy0
ifconfig wpanmon0 up

then I think I did...
ifconfig wpanmon0 down
iz del wpanmon0
i tried to rmmod 'serial' here, but it was still in use
iz del wpan-phy0
this faulted.

What I should have done was 'killall izattach'
