I use autoconfig for this... just by setting the QAUTOVRT system value to
one, the AS/400 will automagically create these devices for you.

Here's a sample device description, just in case you can't use autoconfig
for some odd reason. Using this, you should be able to make them
manually... Just make sure your settings in lp5250d match.

CRTDEVPRT DEVD(PRT01) DEVCLS(*VRT) TYPE(3812) MODEL(1) ONLINE(*NO)
         CTL(QVIRCD0001) FONT(012 *NONE) SEPDRAWER(*FILE) +
         PRTERRMSG(*INFO) MSGQ(*LIBL/DSP01) TRANSFORM(*YES) +
         MFRTYPMDL(*HP4000) PPRSRC1(*LETTER) PPRSRC2(*LETTER) +
         ENVELOPE(*NUMBER10) ASCII899(*NO) IMGCFG(*NONE) +
         CHRID(*SYSVAL) TEXT('lp5250d to Scotts Printer') +
         DEPLOCNAME(*NONE)
