I've never used fvwm, but maybe it uses ctrl-right click as a shortcut for "kill this session" or something similar?

In any event, it appears to be interpreting the ctrl-right click rather
than sending the key sequence through to xterm.

I was missing the XTerm app-defaults file (which I never heard of)
which of course is in /etc/X11 and not ...... oh never mind.
X drives me crazy.  just ranting.  works now.  thanks.
