In W2K, there are different kinds of "startup" programs, due to the
better-thought out design of W2K over W98. Are you interested in:

A) services ("daemons"). These programs run the gamut from things like
DHCP clients, printing system stuff to SQL Server.

B) regular applications that run at boot or login time. This is where
you will find things like the Real Video background task, some System
Tray applets and Quicken's reminder popup (among other things) get
started.

If A), then look in Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative
Tools->Servies. Be careful of what you turn off, some of it is
important. You can google for lists of which servies are turn-offable.

If B), IIRC, there are actually several places in the registry where
you can hook startup scripts, and there is also the startup folder.
There is a control panel applet called "Startup" written by Mike Lin
that lets you easily change these settings without having to spend an
hour spelunking with regedit.

Programs can also run by login scripts at login time, if you are
logging into a domain. You'd have to talk to your domain admin about
changing that.
