There are several nuances to the "servers." Wayne got the core ideas. 

One Linux-related nuance is the boxed "distros" from some places will make
a personal/desktop versus server/professional distinction. But the core of
the Linux in them is the same. No crippling done between them as is
done... ahem... by some OSes. The differences for the Linux sets is in the
extra software on the CDs/DVDs and, sometimes, in the support offered.

In some cases, a nuance of "servers" really means the software that
provides the services. For example, a personal desktop Linux user might
not really do much with Apache, MySQL, etc. (In many cases, it is better
to not have these running automatically if they not really being used and
maintained.)

Figuring out what you want to learn might be the first step.
