Hey David, Welcome! I'm in Ashton myself so can definitely relate to being "between my people" with hotspots in Belleville, Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal, etc. Not many in LGL although there are some very interesting Linux people around.
There is a Makerspace at uOttawa: https://www.uottawa.ca/faculty-engineering/centre-entrepreneurship-engineering-design/facilities/richard-labbe-makerspace Welcoming, and bilingual. I think there is a meetup and club too - really great if you're into 3D printing!
