It *does* matter about the underlying technology? It really doesn't. Whether it's PPP over ATM, or PPP over Ethernet, it doesn't really matter: what matters is that the modem gives you these statistics in some manner. All my modems speak PPPoE and PPPoA, and they all provide link quality and networking statistics, regardless of the protocols used: PPPoE, PPPoA, routing, bridging, NAT, etc. (Apologies if I misunderstood you.) While we're on the topic, this is also a great opportunity to learn RRD. It's a fantastic tool, especially for recording and graphing historical information. Being the foundation of MRTG, and subsequently Cricket, Cacti, and a ream of other monitoring and pseudo-monitoring tools, it's fairly prevalent, and immensely useful. I'm going to spend some time with Cacti in the next few days. I'll see if I can churn out a set of templates for the new SpeedTouch modems to make this a little simpler.
