New Findings Shake Up Open-Source Debate
------------------
Oxford University researchers reveal surprising conclusions about closed- and
open-source software projects in a new paper that may fan the flames in the
divisive debate over how to make better software.

In their study of a "microscopic model of software-bug dynamics" in cathedral,
bazaar and closed-source software projects, theoretical physicists Damien
Challet and Yann Le Du conclude, for the first time, that "software projects
can converge to a bug-free state even with imperfect programmers."

The study is stirring excitement in the development community. "The model is a
computer-science tour de force," said computational neuroscience professor
James L. Olds, who directs the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study at George
Mason University
