The lack is sorely felt by all users, and I believe work is under way to make this feature available. By the time you read this, a cvs tags command or something similar may be available. Until then, there are workarounds. You can run cvs log -h and read the sections of the output following the header symbolic names. Or, if you happen to be on the repository machine, you can just look at the beginnings of some of the RCS les directly in the repository.
