Software patents: getting ready for "P Day"

February 17 could be the decisive day for the future of the controversial directive on the patentability of "computer-implemented inventions". Last week, the legal committee of the EU Parliament paved the way for the complete restart of the whole process, thus widening the gap greatly between it and the Commission and the Council.

Opponents of software patents are nonetheless getting ready for "P Day". For instance, the Association for Free Information Infrastructure (FFII) is organizing another demonstration in Brussels on February 17.
Germany's Ministry of Justice, which also claims that it has been wanting to work towards a compromise in the Council since Christmas, is also said to have been called upon to take action. "I would be very surprised if the German government turned out to be so bereft of instincts as to pass the position of May in the Council on the same day a vote is taken on the cross-party motion in the Bundestag", explains Florian Müller, director of the campaign NoSoftwarePatents.com.
