Ok, for this one, I would recommend you look at the list faq's question
about best books for Linux.  One of the ones mentioned is the Getting
Started Guide that is online. 

It has, among other things, a lot of the basic commands. 

Hrrm, interesting question though--which do I use most frequently in
day-to-day use, that aren't application specific?

Ok, I'd say some basic ones are pwd, mv ls grep ps kill mount umount.

However, every person has different commonly used ones, depending upon
what they do.
