It's not really about Samba, it's rather about Linux clients mounting SMB shares. As I installed Archlinux at work, I was able to mount all SMB shares without a problem. A colleague followed my example and installed Debian (sarge, I believe). We spent the rest of the day trying to figure out why he couldn't mount shares. I had some experience with this, so I made him install samba, whereupon it worked. On the previous job I had, I had a laptop running Debian (can't tell which version, I ran stable for a while until at one point I accidentally upgraded to unstable), where I had not only to install, but _run_ Samba if I wanted to mount shares. Seriously, I seem to have different usage patterns than other people. I'm usually perfectly happy with ftp, ssh and scp, and low requirements are easier to satisfy. However, I never had big trouble with either NFS or Cups (or Samba, for that matter). Whenever I needed them, the configuration was pretty painless. Seems to be a matter of luck.
