Huh?  There's a Ctrl, an Alt, and a number pad on your keyboard, right? 
  While in X, press the Ctrl, the Alt, and the - key on the number pad 
all at once.  It is infinitely simpler than reconfiguring X.  It will 
decrease the resolution.
