Hey there :)

My university grants access to their WLAN over the cisco vpn client,
like most uiversities do these days I guess.
Problem is, to compile it needs the kernel sources which - yep, you
guessed it - I have to d/l from the net.
So I thought I'd use vpnc instead as I had that installed already and I
keep reading its compatible with the mighty cisco one. However I also
keep reading its incompatible though ...

If you can read and understand German, this poor guy has the same
problem (he posted console messages also; havent checked how closely
they resemble mine):

Basically we can connect to the VPN network alright, get the welcome
message and then silence. Thatis, like the topic says, no actual
internet data is being sent to me. However, I can ping all IPs within
the WLAN net, but that works without the vpn connection anyway.

The person in the thread did some more research and seemed to haved
found out that the cisco vpn client uses udp instead of tcp. Thats where
i'm out. I really have no network savvy; I basically know what tcp is
used for, so I gather udp is the same thing (a protocoll), but different.

Any help; maybe on how to channel tcp communication to udp, or sumpn ...
Am I making sense?

Perhaps you can :)
